Cocoon Hammocks

DESIGN AND FABRICATION | Lavender Tessmer and Andrea Fisk

COCOON is a permanent installation of five modular hammock-seats designed and built by Andrea Fisk and Lavender Tessmer for the Elizabeth Danforth Butterfly Garden at Washington University in St Louis. With a budget of $5,000, the challenge of the 2011 competition was to design a construction using wire, or any linear metal, as the primary material and structure for a public installation on the Washington University campus. Wicker furniture served as our initial reference for assembling linear material and continued to influence our material and construction strategy for the large furniture-scale outdoor seating.
